How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone, Mac & Windows

If you've ever tried to share a photo taken on your iPhone and run into compatibility problems, you've likely encountered the HEIC format. Since iOS 11, iPhones have saved photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default — a format that's great for storage but not always compatible with Windows PCs, older Android devices, or many online platforms.

This guide covers every way to convert HEIC to JPG, from the fastest online method to built-in OS tools.

Method 1: Convert HEIC to JPG Online (Fastest)

The easiest way is to use a free online converter. No software installation needed — just upload and download.

  1. Open MyVIPWebTools HEIC to JPG Converter
  2. Click "Choose File" and select your .heic file
  3. Optionally adjust quality (90% is recommended)
  4. Click "Convert to JPG" and download the result

This works on any device — iPhone, Mac, Windows PC — directly in your browser.

Method 2: Convert on a Mac

macOS supports HEIC natively, so converting is simple using Preview:

  1. Open the HEIC file in Preview
  2. Go to File → Export
  3. Choose JPEG from the Format dropdown
  4. Adjust quality and click Save

You can also batch convert multiple files: select them all in Finder, right-click and choose "Open With → Preview", then use File → Export Selected Images.

Method 3: Convert on Windows

Windows doesn't support HEIC natively without a paid codec. The easiest workarounds:

  • Online tool — Use the method above. No install needed.
  • Microsoft Photos app — Install the free "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store (search "HEIF"), then open your HEIC in Photos and use File → Save a copy as JPEG.

Method 4: Stop iPhone from Saving as HEIC

If you want all future photos to save as JPG automatically:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone
  2. Tap Camera → Formats
  3. Select Most Compatible

Your iPhone will now save photos as JPG. The downside is that JPG files take about twice as much storage space as HEIC.

Why Does iPhone Use HEIC?

Apple switched to HEIC because it stores photos at half the file size of JPG while maintaining the same visual quality. This means more photos fit on your phone without sacrificing detail. The format was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and adopted by Apple for its efficiency advantages.

HEIC vs JPG — Which Should You Keep?

Keep HEIC if you primarily use Apple devices and iCloud — you get smaller file sizes with no quality loss. Convert to JPG when you need to share photos with non-Apple users, upload to websites, or use the photos in any software that doesn't yet support HEIC.
